Move your body

9 to 12 years old

Moving our bodies feels good! Sport, exercise, physical activity… whatever you want to call it, movement keeps our heart, brain and muscles as happy as can be.

It doesn’t matter what kind of movement you do. Practicing a dance routine with friends, going on a bushwalk with your family, playing handball during recess or even cleaning your room – it all counts! The most important thing is that you are moving your body in a way that feels good for YOU.

So grab your friends, turn up the music and bring on the fun… it’s time to move!

Moving your body is amazing, but it’s not always easy to find a way to do it that feels fun and good for you. Maybe you don’t have many parks near your house, or it’s hard to find time for sports around homework and other activities.

As our bodies change and grow, certain types of sport and physical activity might start to feel a bit different. Sometimes the things we loved when we were younger just aren’t as much fun anymore.

You might have been obsessed with ballet as a little kid, but then it got kind of serious and you’d much rather be playing basketball now. That’s OK! This happens for adults too, and following what feels good is an important part of finding what feels best for you and your body.

If you’ve ever owned a dog, you know they need to be walked every single day to stay healthy and happy (and not get up to too much mischief). It’s the same for humans – especially kids.

We know that movement makes our body feel good, but did you know this is because it produces chemicals in our brain to make us feel happy? How cool is that?! Being active also makes our heart and muscles stronger, and helps our brain focus and think better.

Sport and exercise have lots of other benefits too, like making new friends. There is no better feeling than working together as a team on the soccer field or netball court to score a goal!

When we focus on all these amazing reasons to move our bodies, it’s pretty clear that it has nothing to do with how we look… it’s all about feeling great on the inside!

    Do what you love!
You don’t have to be the best, score a goal or get 10/10 every time. Try new things, experiment and play around with moving your body in lots of different ways.

    Rest is important too.
When you’ve been on a big hike or worked hard in a game of football, your muscles need time to repair and reset. Pushing our bodies when they are tired means we are more likely to get sick, injured or stop enjoying things.

    Have a go.
The worst thing that could happen is that you don’t like something or want to do it again. Don’t worry if it takes you a while to get the hang of it, either – no one ever won a gold medal the first time they played a sport! Many clubs or teams have come-and-try days so you can give it a go without committing to a whole season.

Movement doesn’t just have to be about sport.
You might not enjoy organised sports, and that’s totally fine. Why not try rock climbing, roller skating, bike riding, yoga, dancing, scootering to school or going for a walk instead?

What I look like is not as important as what I do and who I am being in this world.
I will Embrace my body and encourage other people to do the same.
